Setting Goals

Monday, May 3rd, 2010
When you were younger you may have had many noble goals in place, which you were sure you would accomplish. Maybe you had planned on first completing college, then falling in love and starting a family while also juggling a magnificent career. But not everyone’s lives work out the way they anticipate, and even though the little surprises and detours in life are what make things exciting, there are times when everything seems to go haywire in all the wrong ways. Maybe your life seems boring. Maybe you don’t even recognize your current life as anything you had planned on or wanted. If your life has become something that you really don’t want it to be, remember that you can always change the direction of your life. All it takes is some goal setting and perseverance which can be the key to success.
One of the chief complaints from people, who feel as though their life needs improving, is that they feel as though they are simply going along, not accomplishing much, and not really making any sort of difference in the world. You undoubtedly had goals at some point in your life…what sort of goals do you have now? If your main goal is to get through the day without screaming at your children or to sit through another boring business meeting without falling asleep, then it may be time to set some more ambitious goals for yourself. After all, if you don’t set any goals for yourself, then how will you work towards the things you want to accomplish in life?
People who dream of doing things that not many people get to do for a living – acting, writing, opening their own business, running a large company – often gives up on their dreams before ever really making an attempt at reaching their goals. Look at it this way; someone has to do these jobs, so why not you? Unless you make a truly determined effort to become what you have always wanted to become, you will never know what could have been. Not all people doing the sort of work you want to do know that they would eventually be paid for their passions, but most of them put a lot of hard work into getting where they are. Just because someone else may criticize your dreams as impractical, does not mean that your dreams are impossible.  Give it a try, see what you might accomplish, and even if you aren’t able to attain some of your goals, you will always know that you gave it a shot.
